Princess Anne Released From Hospital After Horseback Riding Injury

Princess Anne was released from Bristol’s Southmead Hospital Friday morning, Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement. She was being treated for a concussion and minor injuries following a horseback riding accident Sunday on the grounds of her country home in Gloucester, Gatcombe Park.

Princess Anne’s husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, shared a statement of gratitude to his wife’s medical team.

“I would like to extend my warmest thanks to the team at Southmead Hospital for their care, expertise, and kindness during my wife’s short stay,” he said.

Sir Tim was seen visiting the Princess Royal in the hospital during her recovery, carrying a blue insulated bag Tuesday and telling press that it contained “a few little treats from home” that he was delivering to his wife of 32 years.

Princess Anne is the royal family’s hardest-working member by number of official public engagements. In 2023, according to the Court Circular, the record of royal engagements, Anne participated in 457 events. She has kept up with her packed schedule this year in the wake of older brother King Charles’ cancer diagnosis and lightened calendar of engagements, stepping in for him on a number of occasions. In light of her accident and recovery, however, the Princess Royal has canceled several upcoming engagements including a planned trip to Canada on medical advice.

She is an accomplished horsewoman and rode for Great Britain in the 1976 Olympics, and recently participated on horseback in the Trooping the Colour celebrations, which also marked Kate Middleton’s first public appearance this year after a lengthy absence for cancer treatment. Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall, has carried on her tradition of horsemanship, and also rode in the Olympics. Anne also attended Royal Ascot last week.
