Here’s What Allegedly Happened To Ta’Kiya Young, The 21-Year-Old Pregnant Woman
According to CNN, Grubb and another officer confronted Young in a grocery store parking lot on August 24, 2023. The officers had reportedly been informed of claims that Young was shoplifting from the store.
“Out of the car,” one of the officers reportedly instructed the woman, per NBC News. “They said you stole stuff. Do not leave.”
According to NBC News as the interaction continued, Young denied the officers’ statement and their order for her to exit the car. At one point, she reportedly asked, “You gonna shoot me?”
Per CNN, body camera footage then showed Young’s car “slowly” moving forward in the direction of the second officer. It was at that moment Grubb reportedly fired a “single shot” into Young’s windshield. Furthermore, the shot fatally killed the woman.
Ta’Kiya Young’s Family Reacts To The Officer’s Indictment
According to NBC News, Young’s grandmother, Nadine, spoke at a news briefing on Tuesday, August 13. Nadine explained that in addition to being pregnant, her granddaughter was a mother to a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old.
Nadine reportedly explained that she is now raising her granddaughter’s children.
“It’s been for me, agony,” she reportedly explained. “It’s been like a whirlwind of just hurt and pain.”
Additionally, Walton reportedly added that Grubb “escalated” the incident and did not follow police protocol.
“Everything he did escalated that situation, and that’s why Ta’Kiya was murdered,” Walton reportedly said at the conference.

Meanwhile, Grubb’s police chief, John Belford, shared a video statement on Facebook confirming that “disciplinary” action will be taken against the officer.
“I want to be very clear: We’re not passing any judgment on whether Officer Grubb acted properly. We haven’t seen the evidence,” Belford stated, per CNN. “However, since people who have been indicted may not legally possess a firearm, the indictment against him leaves us with no choice but to legally begin the disciplinary process.”
Despite the police chief’s compliance, Brian Steel, the executive vice president of a local police union, has voiced his disagreement with Grubb’s indictment.
“…Like all law enforcement officers, Officer Grubb had to make a split-second decision, a reality all too familiar for those who serve to protect our communities,” he stated. “These decisions are made under extreme pressure and often in life-threatening situations, with the primary goal of safeguarding the general public’s and their own lives.”
