Father-Son Duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy to Host Emmys 2024
When the 2024 Emmys premiere on ABC, it’ll be a family affair: The network announced that father-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who each have four Emmys of their own, will host the upcoming 76th telecast.
“For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theater was incentive enough,” said Eugene and Dan in a statement shared with Vanity Fair. “We’re thrilled to be able to raise a glass to this extraordinary season of television and can’t wait to spend the evening with you all on September 15.”
Back in 2020, the Levys’ hit series Schitt’s Creek swept the comedy categories—earning trophies for lead actress Catherine O’Hara and supporting actress Annie Murphy in addition to acting trophies for Eugene and Dan, plus outstanding comedy series, for which both father and son earned statues as executive producers. Dan won two additional trophies for writing and directing the show’s series finale, “Happy Ending.” And Eugene already had two Emmys heading into the night from writing SCTV back in the 1980s.
“Eugene and Dan Levy created two of the most iconic TV characters in recent history and are a perfect fit to host television’s biggest night,” said Emmys producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay. “We look forward to the audience having an unforgettable experience with this dynamic duo.”
The Levys will host from the Peacock Theater in LA in a gig that was reportedly first offered to ABC’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Kimmel also passed on hosting next year’s Oscars, which also air on ABC. Eugene has ties to the 2024 Emmy nominations—his Apple TV+ series, The Reluctant Traveler, is nominated and he next appears in the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, the third installment of which is nominated for 21 Emmys this year.
In announcing the Levys as hosts, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich praised their “comedic intuition and uncanny ability to capture the hearts of viewers,” while Television Academy chair Cris Abrego saluted the “two generations of comedy genius,” saying in a statement, “Eugene and Dan Levy are known for creating unforgettable laugh-out-loud moments onscreen, and together they are supercharged. I cannot wait for Emmy fans to see what they have in store for all of us.”
The 2024 Emmys will air live from ABC, Sunday, September 15, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, and will stream the next day on Hulu.
