Sources told CNBC-TV18, that there was concern within government circles that despite thousands of crores being spent on subsidies, many end-users were unaware that they were benefiting from government support. The introduction of these e-vouchers or certificates aims to bridge this gap, ensuring that customers can visibly see the financial assistance they are receiving.
The government has launched the PM eDrive subsidy scheme, with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore. Under this initiative, buyers of electric vehicles will receive a unique certificate that prominently highlights the financial support provided by the central government. This effort is aimed at ensuring that consumers are fully aware of the subsidies they are receiving under the scheme.
The certificate issued under the PM eDrive scheme will feature several key details, including the name and photograph of the buyer, the name of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and most notably, the image of the Prime Minister. This measure is designed to inform every customer that the subsidy they are receiving is directly from the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

The process for receiving the subsidy is seamless and quick. When a customer purchases an electric vehicle, the dealer will conduct an eAadhaar-based KYC (Know Your Customer) authentication through a mobile app. Following this, a groundbreaking step in the form of facial authentication will be required—a first in any government-backed initiative.
After this, customers will take a mandatory selfie at a selfie booth at the dealership, which, along with the e-voucher, will be uploaded to the PM eDrive portal. A certificate will then be generated, with dealers indicating the entire process takes approximately five minutes.
