Instagram Will Use New Edits App for Testing Features

With Instagram looking to launch its CapCut-style Edits app next month, it’s also working to add in a range of features that’ll make its dedicated creation and editing platform a valuable addition to the IG ecosystem.

Last week, Instagram previewed some coming generative elements that it’s looking to add into the app, including AI-generated background editing and the capacity to animate still images.

And in his regular Q and A on IG Stories late last week, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri also shared another interesting tidbit of information about their ambitions for the new app.

As per Mosseri:

“We want to make sure that there are the best possible creative tools for making not only Reels but [for] photos both in the Instagram app and then for video in the Edits app. They’re built on the same codebase, and you’re going to see probably new features be tried first in the Edits app first over time, and the ones that work, we’ll probably integrate into the main app.”

So new IG elements are likely to be made available in the Edits platform first, which could make it an even more valuable addition to your creative process.

Instagram has already announced a range of foundational features that Edits will have when it launches next month, including:

  • The ability to capture video up to 10 minutes in the app and store drafts
  • Edit via a playback timeline, enabling more granular control
  • An option to find additional inspiration for their clips, including trending audio insights, and a real time overview of what’s popular in the app
  • The capacity to record content in higher quality
  • Access to video analytics

That could make Edits a great tool for creating more stand-out, engaging IG content, while its generative AI tools will become more and more advanced as Meta continues to evolve its AI models.

If CapCut does actually get cut off from U.S. users, as part of the TikTok sell-off bill, then Edits could become the essential creative app, especially for short-form content.

Either way, some interesting additions, which could improve the value of the tool

You can sign up to pre-order Edits, which is set for release in March, here.
